International business is booming for one Proudly Gnawfolk member

As the Brexit negotiations rumble on, these are uncertain times for many local producers with ambitions to expand. So we were delighted to hear news from Gnaw about how their international trade in chocolate handcrafted in Norfolk is positively booming!

Some of you may have noticed the Gnaw Chocolate mini bar range in Sainsbury’s recently – and we’re informed they will soon be launching in high street chain, Next too. While Norwich-based Gnaw will always be, in their own words, ‘Proudly from Gnawfolk’, an incredible 80% of the company’s turnover now comes from directly international trade – and this figure is set to soar…

In the first six months of 2018, Gnaw launched its products in six new markets - the USA, China, France, Morocco, South Africa and Germany; they now export to more than 20 countries! Most recently, the company signed a one million pound contract with Russia to launch the premium single origin Brooke & Amble range this autumn.

Closer to home, it’s been a resounding ‘je t’aime’ towards Gnaw’s chocolate range in France, particularly their new chocolate and granola bar range. Handcrafted in Norwich with locally sourced ingredients, natural flavours, and no added nasties, the new 35g bars are made with 35% natural healthy ingredients – seeds, fruits, nuts and crunchy granola, grown in our finest Norfolk fields. These bars are all gluten-free and vegetarian – and the dark bar is also dairy-free.

Production of this new bar demanded a new packing line for the new sized bars at the Gnaw factory and following unprecedented overseas demand, a further significant investment was needed just four weeks after launch to ensure orders were delivered. To facilitate this growth, Gnaw brought in cooling tunnels and further mixing and tempering tanks along with additional production staff - and they also doubled the factory hours. This investment project is just one of the drivers behind Gnaw’s forecasted 266% growth in turnover for 2018 – 2019.

Another Proudly Norfolk success story – this time on a truly global scale!
